What's Bubbling....
New Products 2008
Incredibly Warm Dry Suit Undergarments from 4th Element
SubXero Fourth Element is the ultimate base layer for use under a drysuit. Made using Polartec® Powerstretch® which was originally developed for NASA, the Xerotherm traps a layer of air - a much better insulator than water - next to the skin, keeping the wearer drier and more comfortable. Designed to be worn under a padded undersuit or on its own under a crushed neoprene drysuit, it provides astonishing warmth without contributing to bulk. |
SubXero is a new product from the folks at 4th Element and
I am excited to start diving it in Lake Superior. I have been
diving the Artic and Xerotherm for the past year and found it to be the
best insulation with the lowest bulk to return of warmth I've ever worn!
Xerotherm is a first base layer or light undergarment for warmer conditions. Artic is a thicker layer worn in cold water environments like Lake Supeior. Stop in and see our selection of Dry Suit undergarments including: SubXero, Artic and Xerotherm. The SubXero has been developed for use underneath membrane and
trilaminate drysuits and all independent testers have rated it as the
warmest undersuit they have tried. |

Going Under Dive Center Welcome Home MN National Guard Troops
All of us at Going Under Dive Center would like to extend a Welcome Home to
all troops who have served in the conflict in Iraq / Afghanistan, we are
proud of your service!
(AP) Camp Douglas, Wis. The smell of green grass
and humidity were just some of the things Minnesota National Guard troops
appreciated as they stepped off a plane in central Wisconsin after serving
more than a year in Iraq.
The 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 34th Infantry Division served longer in
combat than any other Minnesota unit since World War II and was the
longest-serving U.S. military unit of the Iraq war. Its mission was extended
by 125 days as part of the troop surge ordered by President Bush. A small
contingent, 73 members of a Grand Rapids-based company, returned home from
Fort McCoy on June 23.
The "Red Bulls" had the dangerous mission of escorting convoys, securing
supply routes and safeguarding logistics bases. They've been awarded 180
Purple Hearts for combat injuries, 485 Bronze Stars, 24 Bronze Stars with
Valor, and commanders have submitted the paperwork for four Silver Stars.
Nine members of the 1st Brigade Combat Team have been killed in Iraq.
The impending returns do not mean the end of the Minnesota National Guard's
involvement in the Iraq war or other overseas assignments. About 600 other
Minnesota Guard members are either serving in or due to be sent to Iraq or
Afghanistan. Another 400 will leave this fall for a peacekeeping mission in
Kosovo.
To help welcome our soldiers home, Ron Benson would like to extend a little
bit of relief after all of the stresses by offering our troops who have
served in these conflicts: Free PADI Scuba Lessons. After spending
more than a year in a desert, it is well deserved to get wet and blow some
bubbles.
Please help us spread the word, if you have a family member or friend who
was called to duty please let them know by passing on this message and my
direct email address

Remember those still serving, bring them all home safely.

"Defense of Fort McHenry" - "The Star Spangled Banner"
O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
MN Scuba "Trash Talk"
I would like to apologize to our regular customers for the distasteful discourse that has occurred on the mnscuba/mntoilet forum since the burglary of Going Under Dive Center on December 17th, 2006; it was a necessary process to go through to flush out some of the trash in our community that was responsible for, or supported the criminals who conducted the burglary. For those not aware that the dive center burglary was committed by people who frequented the mnscuba/mntoilet forum, and a crack addict who is under investigation with the Minneapolis police, see GUDC Burglary. The fact is that the burglary was a personal vendetta initiated by a very mentally ill, pathological liar who's life is crumbling with divorce; uncovering his life of lies; he is not a financial expert; he is not a business manager; he is phony.
Immediately after the burglary, posts were made on mnscuba/mntoilet making fun of the burglary as well as insinuating that the burglary was actually committed by self (Ron Benson) for insurance reasons. I immediately contacted the moderators who ignored the request to keep the forum a responsible site for divers to discuss local and regional scuba activities. With the gross incompetence of the forum moderators, it is my recommendation that divers avoid mnscuba/mntoilet and go to the larger and more popular forum www.scubaboard.com and log onto the regional Minnesota board for any forum posting in the future.
The simple minded people who hide behind pseudonyms and post trash on mnscuba are not likely to stop their childish behavior, so for this reason I choose to post all Going Under Dive Center information and updates on Scuba Board. The Minnesota community has suffered enough with the people responsible for our burglary, the trash talk on the forums and the suspected recent burglary of a defunct dive store.

The following information is on the burglary of Going Under Dive Center, the criminals who stole equipment and the sad pathetic people in the MNScuba On-line forum community that supported them.

Superior North Shore
Wreck Diver Challenge
The Great Lakes are home to some of the finest shipwrecks in the world, I say this having traveled from the UK to the far South Pacific. So in the spirit of adventure GUDC is hosting a fun and engaging challenge to divers to visit key shipwrecks and experience the wrecks, the artifacts and memories that will last a lifetime. There will be three levels of Wreck Diver Challenge, from beginner to extreme advanced level.
Wreck Diving MN North Shore aboard the Alma
Ron has owned and operated the Alma, as a U.S. Coast Guard licensed dive charter since the early 90’s. The Alma is a well know boat on Lake Superiors North Shore as it was once the harbor utility boat for Reserve Mining and all the locals know it as a sturdy seaworthy vessel. The large open deck is ideal for divers, large heated cabin and this year Ron has made a walk through transom to access the generous swim platform / dive ladder. Based out of Silver Bay Marina during the early season to dive the popular wrecks of Hesper, Maderia, Ely as well as boulder fields of Split Rock Light and other natural formations. In later fall Ron heads down to Duluth to dive the Wilson, Mayflower, Niagra and A.C. Adams as well as technical deep wrecks of Friant, Onoko and newly discovered Wallace. Weekend trips on the North Shore include daily two tank dives for $75, and technical dives are priced per individual wreck and groups.
Boat diving is the easiest way to visit the wrecks – show up at the marina, load your gear and suit up…the next step is off the swim platform and down the descent line – no long surface swims!
Stay at a local campground or find a cozy cabin and you have a memorable weekend diving Lake Superior.
We’re all about diving!
GUDC’s goal is to provide our students and customers with quality diving activities locally as well as abroad. This newsletter is dedicated to providing you with opportunities to get out and get wet! As space is limited, we will only be able to tease you with a few ideas and ask that you stop in to visit with any of the staff and learn more about the line up of adventures we have planned.
Crosby & Wazee continue to lead our list of local dive sites as the top two local destinations for a number of reasons: both locations are strip mines that have flooded with cool clear spring water, and both of them have submerged forest that are not only unique to look at, but provide a habitat for the many fish that have been introduced into these lakes. Both of these locations also have great camping (or hotels if you prefer), and offer a great platform for you to engage in many of the continued education courses that we offer. How about trying a drysuit, fish ID, nitrox, or extending your depth…these and many more are offered monthly at each location. Lake Superior is no shrimp in comparison to our top favorites, sometimes it is a matter of who you ask….and you will never see the quality of shipwrecks Lake Superior has to offer in any other location. The temperature of the lake is one minor setback, but we have the cure for chilly divers –Drysuits! Once a diver masters the comfort and confidence of their equipment, Superior is the place to be to see shipwrecks, as well as unique underwater formations like lava flows. We will be offering monthly trips to dive the shipwrecks of the North Shore of Superior as well as two trips to Isle Royale, the undisputed king of freshwater shipwreck locations.
Square, Pearch, Little Long, etc….we dive them all and don’t want you to pass up the opportunity to jump in for a quickie, everybody needs a quickie now and then! These close to home, or conveniently located lakes, offer a chance to relax underwater, watch some fish, or just blow some bubbles and work on your dive skills. We offer numerous opportunities such as our Fun Dives, a regularly scheduled event to go dive for the “Fun of It.”
